Sail and Fan

I have been asked the following several times by students of mine... Can a sailboat use a fan to make it sail forward? The answer is no, so why not? Because if you have two forces acting equally on each other, then you are going nowhere. The 2 forces, fan and sail, cancel each other out.

If you use the sail only via the wind, then of course you will sail forward. If you use the fan only against the air you get a fan boat and you move forward, stick the fan blade in the water like a propeller in the denser air called water and you have even more density to push against and again you move forward.

So, it's obvious use sail only or motor only with a fan in the air or propeller in the water to move forward.

Mark Rober talks about this in his video "Testing if you can blow your own sail (see video below)." He also talks about the density of the air that also plays into a sailboat sailing and other affects that are quite interesting.

In addition, Mark points out the importance air density, known as air pressure... On ground there is more air pressure because there are more air molecules, higher up like on the top of Mt Everest, there is much less air pressure, less air molecules. Air molecules weigh more down low than higher up. Gravity is pulling on the air molecules. A helium ballon will rise because its lighter than the air molecules around it. Thus, a sailboat will sail better with more air pressure versus less, but for us sailors the air pressure is always good as we mostly sail at sea level or on lakes that are higher up inland but still have more than enough air pressure.

Hobie Potholes

After a couple of challenging years, it's time to get our Inland NW Hobie Cat and Small Boat Sailor club going again. This is our first event of 2024 that will include a fun Saturday distance maze race through the sand islands of the Potholes Reservoir just below Moses Lake, WA. in Eastern WA. Prizes given! In the evening we will have a beach party.

Bring your kites. This area has amazing winds.

You can come for the day's events or stay longer and camp with us. We will camp for free on the northeast side of the reservoir.

Event takes place July 27, Saturday. Camping over the weekend.

Hayden Lake, Idaho USA overboard recovery

Spent a beautiful day in October 2022 on Hayden Lake Idaho practicing overboard recovery of Wilson the volleyball. Three teenagers learning to sail and practice picking up Wilson and type 4 throwable. If you want to learn to sail to a dock but are concerned with hitting the dock under sail, I recommend practicing overboard recovery drills, as when you do so you're learning to stop and go, and those skills are transferable to safe docking.

Halloween and Trick-or-Treat

 Join us on October 30th for a Halloween/Harvest Community Market at the Silver Lake Mall in Coeur d'Alene Idaho USA from 10:AM to 3:PM. Lots of great locally made products to buy and things to see. First sailing club and Sea Scout activity of the year

Hello fellow Sailors and Sea Scouts...

This last Thursday (7th) we had our first club and Sea Scout activities of the year learning to splice line via Dakota Osborn who is serving in the Navy aboard the carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

So, sorry some of you missed this great activity but no worries as there are more activities again on the first Thursday of February (and again on the 3rd Thursday of this and next month for the Sea Scouts).

Attention we need your help!

Hello fellow Hobie sailors, and sailors in general. We are looking for Hobie 14's, Hobie 16's, and Wave's for our youth and accessible sailing programs. I (Miles Moore) currently own 4 Hobie Waves that I use for my sailing school and for the Sea Cats/Youth sailing. Also I have donated one Hobie 14 to the youth program. It is my hope to get some Wave's to replace my fleet of Wave's as my Wave's are not always available due to my classes and other programs. So the plan is to get Waves and Hobie 14's for youth to solo sail and train on. Hobie 16's are needed for team sailing and for the accessible Hobie 16 Trapseat sailing (disAbled sailing).

So if you know people that have any Hobie's they are not using that they might like to donate to the youth and accessible programs please refer them to us. Also financial contributations can be made to help us purchase boats and attend events. Donations can be tax deductible as we have non profit status. Sea Cat end of the year note!

Hello Sea Cats/Youth Hobie Sailors we just had our last official meeting of the year… however we still have several activities coming up.

Oct. 31 at 8:AM we will meet at the Fun To Sail/Sail Marine store and then drive over to the lake to sail the boats and remove them from the lake.

Oct. 31 at 3:PM will be the Sea Cats Halloween Party... Stay tuned as the Location and details will be announced shortly. Contact Levi via calling or texting 208-704-4454. If you have Levi’s personal contact info you can contact him via that method.

Again no activities are officially planned for Nov. and Dec.

Also a new calendar of events for 2016 has been posted here on this website so click on the calendar tab above view it. This is a base calendar of events and more details about our activities will be added in the coming weeks and months. Also note some of the activities on the calendar are not just for the sea cats, and sailing classes our offered to all.

ATTENTION HOBIE SAILORS & OTHERS...

OVERNIGHT SAILING & CAMPING AT CAMP EASTON

We are happy to announce that our annual Camp Easton - Sailing Voyage, Beach Party, and Camp Out is set for Friday, October 2nd - Saturday, October 3rd.

We will sail from the Lake Coeur d'Alene 3^rd Street Boat Launch over to the camp Friday. Some are planning to sail over at noon on Friday and others later after they get off work.

Once there, we'll have dinner Friday night, talk about future Hobie Fleet and Sea Scout adventures, and camp out on the beach. Early Saturday we will do a shoreline service project.

Hobie Wave Youth Americas Cup Program

The Americas Cup authority has developed a youth sailing program for youth ages 9-12 in Burmuda on Hobie Wave catamarans. I have always said the Hobie Wave is the perfect youth sailing boat for youth ages 6 to 16... from 16 they can keep sailing the Wave as an adult, or move into the exciting world of Hobie 16 doubles adult racing, or into A Class foiling Cats for solo racing or into F18 cats (soon to be foiling). 1. April 2 (Thursday), Rig, Launch, and Sail the Hobie Wave's. We will meet at the SAIL Marine store at noon where the boats are currently at. This activity will help youth with the US Sailing Certification. Anyone that wants to help is welcome… but with this activity we want to make sure the youth can sail. Are you attending... Yes or No.

2. April 17-18… Scout Orama at the Kootenai County Fair Grounds. Camp Friday night and Saturday run our Sea Cat booth at this event all day. There will be various Scouting activities that you can do as well. I will bring theSailing Simulator so we can teach people how to sail. This is a great opportunity to recruit youth to our ship. I do need to find out if female scouts can camp the night… More details coming soon! Attending… Yes or No?

3. April 24-25, Accessible Sailing Event FOR ALL at Lake Cocolalla, ID. This event is for everyone… but there will be an accessible/disabled sailing component to this event. Several persons with spinal cord injuries who are vets (and some without spinal cord injuries) and some who are not vets will be giving the opportunity to sail aboard a Hobie Tandem Island (official sailboat for those with disAbilities), Hobie 16 (hopefully if I can find a Hobie 16 to put my Trapseats on (Trapseats are adaptive wing seats that attach to either side of the boat), A Hobie Wave, and in addition will have some Trailer-able keelboats there as well. A reporter from the Spokesman Review will be there taking pics, etc.

This will be a great event for anyone wanting to experience assisting persons with disAbilities to sail. The main two things to remember is to NOT use the word “Handicapped” and do NOT touch a persons wheelchair without their permission. At the event I will give guidance as needed. These persons with disAbilities who are attending have no mental issues… they are sharp and will also give you the guidance in how to assist them if they need it at all. You will love these individuals with disAbilities… they are awesome and you will have a lot of fun hanging out with them.

The plan is to arrive at Lake Cocolalla (click on this link to learn about this lake and get directions…  http://boatingtheinlandnw.blogspot.com/2012/03/lake-cocolalla-bonner-county-idaho.html ) boat launch/camping area at 3:PM and rig boats (coming later or much later is fine). You can then camp the night (bring your own sleeping bag and food. If any of you have tents let me know). We will sail all day Sat. and at the end of the day de-rig and put the boats on the trailers. If you can not come overnight then please come Saturday morning at 9:AM. Attending… Yes or No?

A not to the youth Sea Cats… Because of all these activities this month there will NOT be a second Sea Cat meeting for the month of April. During the summer we may not have formal meetings at all but our activities will serve as our meetings and sailing advancements.

Sea Cat Meeting

Sea Cat meeting happen every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month unless otherwise noted on the calendar of this site. ACCESSIBLE SAILING

The good news I would like to report is that my accessible/disAbled sailing program will be fully running this summer. And it looks like I may even have a new location to moor the accessible boats. I recently started accesstooutdoors.com and because of this effort I am getting more demand than ever to offer sailing to our local vets, etc., particularly those with spinal cord injuries… which is my specialty.

If you know of any Hobie 16’s that could be donated to my disabled sailing program please let me know. I am in desperate need of two Hobie 16’s to be outfitted with my Trapseats. Even having one Hobie 16 would be huge.

I will also be adding two Tandem Islands as well to the program… I am still working on the funding for this effort but Hobie has been very generous in supporting my efforts via a deal on Islands.

Also RS Sailboats has a new 20’ accessible/disAbled keelboat that I am also looking to add to my fleet. More on that later…

The goal is to have 2 Tandem Islands, 2 Hobie 16’s, and 1 RS Venture Keelboat in the fleet to be able to fully make sailing accessible to our local vets and others. It’s a big project but an important one as well. If you know anyone that has a spinal cord injury in particular then you know getting them away for the daily challenge of dealing with such a disAbililty is a huge benefit to their health on many levels.

SEA SCOUTS

The Sea Scout youth program is moving along nicely. We have meetings at my store the 1^st and 3^rd Sunday of each month unless otherwise noted. We are doing some fundraising so we can develop a budget for this program so no youth is left out. I am happy to announce that some local groups and people are stepping forward in big ways to help out with our budget needs, etc. If you would like to help out please let me know as the more support we get the more we can do for the youth. ENDING

I hear people regularly say this… “why is sailing not bigger in this area.” The truth is the only way it can become big in our area is if people come out to our sailing activities and volunteering to support our youth, disAbled, and adult programs and activities. Really it just comes down to getting out sailing either by yourself or with us… the more sailboats on the water that better.

I know there is a lot going on in the world that is more important than sailing, however I also know sailing is a great way to reduce stress, and socializing with great people can bring many benefits to ones life… I know it has for me.

FOR SALE… The 1979 Venture 22 keelboat I am selling for a friend has lowered the price from $2500 to $1500. I really love how the Venture 22 sails and this is as great bare bones boat for someone wanting a way to get into a trailer-able keelboat at a low price. Comes with sails, trailer, and gear. FOR SALES… The Corsair F27 trimaran price has come down to 39,999. This is a nice boat with extra Genoa, 9 hp outboard motor, and big cabin for extended cruising. The Islands allow us to accommodate youth with physical disabilities. This youth program is for ages 14 (13 if graduated from the 8^th grade) through 20. This is a program for youth interested in sailing, adventure, and socializing with like minded youth, etc. We can accommodate various physical disabilities within reason but if a youth has a cognitive disability they should contact Special Needs Rec. in CdA or contact the Spokane Therapeutic Program for recreational opportunities. We do not run events on Sunday and we do offer an opening and close pray at all events and meetings. However you do not need to be religious to participate… all are welcome!

INLAND NORTHWEST SAILORS… I want to remind everyone that the club burgee/flags are available for sale at my store (I can mail one to you) for $26. THRIVE FOODS… I will have Thrive food for sailors meetings/classes every week starting next week. I will teach about foods you can store on your boat and how to do it; How to cook freeze-dried foods, etc. Great thing about these foods they are the same price or lower as compared to foods you can purchase in the store, their nutritional value is off the charts, and you can measure the food out resulting in no thrown away foods… doesn’t go bad like foods you get in the store, so really it’s a big savings. Not only can you store the foods for emergencies up to 30 years but again can eat the food daily with a shelf live of 2 or so years… if you do eat it daily you will see your health improve. DISABLED/ACCESSIBLE SAILING starts again this year. I am looking for a Hobie 16 to be donated to the program as I have the adaptive wing seats but no boat. The age of the H16 needs to be 1986 or newer. Some 1984-85 boats can work but I will need to check them out closely. The boat has to be safe to accommodate persons with disabilities. Funding is coming in slowly (but is coming) for the purchase of a new Hobie Tandem Island. With the new seats on the new Tandem Islands it means I can not more easily accommodate various disabilities. Priest Lake Sailing and Camping Adventure... July 25-28, 2014

Priest Lake Sailing Adventure

Hello Sea Scouts and Inland NW Sailors!

This Friday at 6:PM I am leaving the SAIL Marine store (406 W Miles Ave., Hayden) with the Sea Scouts to go up to Priest Lake for our annual sailing and camping trip, and return sometime Monday. We will be camping on Forest Service land for free a short distance from the Lion Head S.P. beach. You are welcome to just come for the day or stay the whole time with us… or near us at various camping spots. If you are not bringing a boat I am not sure if there will be room for you on a boat but Sunday is a hike and slide day you can join us.

To help you find our camping spot and other details there is a map I have created below. In addition I have added yellow markers on the Google Map with even more detail. It’s not likely my cell phone will work up at Priest Lake so if you have questions please call me (Miles) before I leave on the trip Friday… 208-704-4454.

It costs $5 to enter the park to launch from either the launch or from the beach. Some of us will keep our boats on the beach or anchor right off the beach. I will launch my keelboat early morning on Saturday and then take her out of the water late Saturday and take the boat to my campsite.

On Saturday the plan is to sail all day and travel up the channel to Upper Priest Lake.

Sunday the plan is to drive and hike up to the slice rock natural slide and slide and swim all day. To slide the slick rock you will need to see the Google Map or come with us so you do not get lost trying to find it.

July Sailing News and Priest Lake Trip

Hello follow Inland NW Sailors!

We had a great float down the CdA River from just above the HWY 90 bridge to the Old

 
Mission. We had 4 adults and 6 scouts. We liked this adventure so much we are going to do it again soon… maybe next week on the North Fork of the CdA River.

Next on our agenda is our big sail and camp trip at Priest Lake. The plan is to sail off of Lion Head Beach… sail all day Sat. Then on Sunday is a hike up to the slick rock slide for a day of fun sliding and swimming. We are leaving Friday evening and some of us are coming back Sunday evening and others are coming back Monday morning or so. We are camping for free on Forest Service Land near Lion Head State Park and parking our boats on the Lion Head beach… cost $5/car to enter the park. Some sailors with Keelboats will be anchoring off Lion Head Beach. I hope you will join us as our Sea Scouts will be there, Some Hobie Sailors from the Tri-Cities will be there, the Lewiston and Clarkston Club members will be on the lake as well, and of course our Inland NW sailing members will be there… going to be a lot of sailors-sailboats present. Again if any of you would like to donate funding for food to the scouts, etc. we would appreciated it. I might add thanks for your donations thus far :). It’s official SAIL Marine is now a Hunter Marine dealer. Hunter boat line related to trailer-able sailboats are the 15’ and 18’ sailing dinghies (no cabins) and a 22 foot keelboat. Hunter is doing away with their current 22 and announcing in October their new H226 Keelboat. This keelboat will be 22’ with a good sized cabin, with improved sailing performance and trailer-ability. I will have more info about the Hunter line on my www.funtosail.com site shortly.

Hello fellow Inland NW Sailors! 4 Items of business.

2. Event Date change! I am wondering if you all would be ok with changing the date of our annual regatta at Higgins Point from Aug 2 to the 9th. Aug 2nd is the same date as the Commodore Cup on Flathead Lake MT. Let me know if any of you disapprove of this date change. If I get no responses then I will assume the change is ok. 3. I am hoping you all can help us find used sailboats for the Sea Scouts as a revenue source. The plan is to find used sailboats and then re-sell them to develop a budget for the scouts. So if you see any used sailboats parked in a field or drive way, etc. that looks like it’s not being used maybe you could ask the owner if they would like to donate it to the Sea Scouts. Also remember youth ages 14-20 male or female can join the Sea Scouts. 4. This July 10th is our float down the North Fork of the CdA River. It will just be a fun social get-together… so grab your floatees, pdf’s, and join us. July 12th is the next small boat sailing class, and July 25-28 is our Sailing Camping/Cruise on Priest Lake. Desert Regatta this weekend!

This weekends is the Desert Regatta, which is in my view the best run small boat regatta in the Inland Northwest. Don't miss it! Learn more at http://www.cbsc.info/

The Inland Northwest Sailors and Sea Cats will be there in force. I might add the club (Columbia Basin Sailing Club) running this regatta puts on a great evening dinner that is out of this world.

SAIL Fest a success and the Deseret Regatta

It was an extremely successful day at the SAIL Fest just this last Sat (6/7)… we had a lot of people come to our booth and go sailing. We now have new club members signed up as well as some new Sea Scouts from this event. And for SAIL Marine it was a good day with several boat sales in the works.

I was amazed with just a few people how much could be accomplished. Bruce brought a Hobie 16 and in spite of having some back pain he worked tirelessly taking people for a sail; Mitch peddled his Hobie Tandem Island 3 hours each way to help out; The Sea Cats helped a lot with un-packing the boats, rigging them, and then loading again; Levi (one of our Sea Cats) took a lot of people sailing on the Bravo; Skip worked the booth and singed up a lot of people for the club and Sea Cats, plus brought food and drink; I (Miles) had the pleasure of taking people sailing on the Wave and doing whatever else needed to be done (brought the Wave, another TI, Bravo, Compac16, etc.), plus trying to sell a boat here and there. I was so thankful for all our volunteers. I know many of you were busy this last weekend so thank you for your moral support.

What we need next is hopefully a couple of you to bring your sailboats to the Deseret Regatta and take the Sea Cats as crew. This regatta takes place this coming Saturday June 14th. We leave on Friday the 13th and will get back on the 16th. Also on the 16th we are hiking to the Palouse Falls. We are well short of our fundraising goal of $750… we currently have $100 toward our goal. If you could help us it would be greatly appreciated. Again we are developing a budget via applying for grants and sponsors but right now we just have you all for funding source.

Lessons… Just a reminder June 21 is the next small boat sailing class.
