The Worst Sailboats?

I thought this video about the worst sailboats is interesting. I do not totally agree but almost do.

I made a comment on this video, here it is...

"I am the one in the video sailing the Super Snark. I used to sell this boat until covid took it out of production. In this video he comments that they are fragile, but they are anything but. I have seen the original boats (call the Sea Snark with no plastic covering) that are all foam, not plastic covering still sailing, 1960's models. This boat first went into production in 1954, later in the 80's they covered the hull and cockpit in plastic and renamed if the Super Snark. More people have learned to sail on this boat than any other. I sailed my Snark for years, raced against Lasers in light winds and won, they are great in light winds. Sailed in heavy air too, and still fun to sail. By the way the mast is not flexi as they are short masts due to a lateen sail set up. Sure, this boat is not high performance, but who cares as they are fun to sail, and durable.

Sad to say I got a dealership selling the 26M, bad mistake. New boats would come to me that leaked bad, inconsistent thickness of fiberglass in the hull and deck. They sail like crap and do not motor all that well either. Yes, there are some who own them, that love them, but it's because they do not know any better.

Not mentioned in this video are the West Wright Potters, likely due to them being built well, etc. I think the Potters are less than desire-able, the 14 and 15 can capsize, which is next to impossible to recover from, and the 19 sails like a box (not a good thing). Still with those faults they should not in this video as one of the worst sailboats.

I agree with his assessment on the other boats in the video. When it comes to trailer-able sportboats I love the Montgomery's, Sage17, San Juan 21, Catalina 22, Compacs, and the Malbec18.com . Great boats."

Clean Distilled Drinking Water

So as some of you know who have taken my sailing classes and others who know me outside of sailing, know how important I feel clean drinking water is. Not just clean drinking water but also using no disposable water bottles to keep our environment cleaner, particularly our oceans.

I am extremely happy to announce that I have found the perfect distiller. Yes, distilled water is king related to clean drinking water and is far better for one's health than any other water. When water is distilled it leaves behind all the impurities that would otherwise enter your body and has to work to get it out and/or may not be able to get it out creating all kinds of health problems, such as gallstones, reduced circulation, etc. I will write another article about this but for now I wanted to let you know about this distiller I discovered.

Pure & Secure LLC based in Lincoln NE builds its distillers all here in the USA, no foreign parts and then assembled in the USA, it's all built and assembled in the USA.

Besides being USA built the model I like the best is its countertop unit (they have many models). There are many countertops system offered on Amazon, etc. with biased reviews (inputted by the company plants). As many discover these systems are poorly made and sadly have poor results. Yes, they are cheap costing between $60 and $150's. The Pure & Secure system is $800 (some discounts offered). So even though you pay much more upfront, in the end it lasts forever (not like the cheap ones), produces a lot of water, and the company has the best customer support.

I have used my countertop system for a month now and will never drink tap water again. Also, I need to remind everyone that bottled water with its so-called spring water is typically nothing more that glorified and expensive tap water. And the water is put in BP toxic bottles that leach that chemical into the water in those bottles.

For me distilled is the only option for clean drinking water. In addition, I only use glass or metal (not aluminum) water bottles that are not plastic disposables bottles that get into our oceans killing marine life, etc.

Rocket or Sunfish or Aqua Fin

Rocket

There are 3 board boats on the market that I recommend. They are all great boats, and you really cannot go wrong by purchasing any of them, however the Rocket I feel is a step above the other two (Sunfish and Aqua Fin).

Sunfish

Aqua Finn

Both the Sunfish and Aqua Fin have a little square cockpit where you can put your feet. Originally the Sunfish was a board boat with no cockpit, but when the designer discovered his pregnant wife could not sail it with your leg getting in the way he inserted a square area for her to put her feet and thus the current design, which the Aqua Fin copied. The Rocket does not have a small square cockpit but a full length 6-foot cockpit, where you can literally lay down in.

All 3 boats come with a single Lateen Sail (Triangle sail). The Rocket does offer an alternative square top high-performance sail.

Rocket

The Rocket is also lighter and more of a model spin off of the other boats. Originally the Rocket was called the Phantom, but Dave with Fulcrum Speed Works purchased the models and building rights and upgraded it to its current lightweight but durable design. I might add Dave with Speed Works use to build Lasers with his father many years ago, so his boat building experience and design skills are legendary.

I do not sell the Rocket, but I highly recommend it, if you are looking for a board boat buy a Rocket. Click Here to learn more and purchase.

Historical Lake Ceour d'alene

Amelia Wheaton... First steamboat on Lake Coeur d'Alene Idaho, launched 1880. In this picture she is docked in the big pool on the Coeur d'Alene River in Cataldo, Idaho. Notice the Sacred Heart Old Mission in the background. This was typically the furthest these large steamboats would go up the river but sometimes during high water they would go a few more miles up the river to kingston, Idaho. Information, pictures, etc. like this will soon be posted on our new Lake Coeur d'Alene history site.

It is with great anticipation that we are announcing that our 2nd edition Historical Lake Coeur d'Alene chart will be coming out this May 2024, to be shown for the first time at the first annual Northwest Hunt Fest at the Kootenai County Fair grounds. This show is for hunters but is also an outdoor show in general as well.

This new chart, called Historical Lake Coeur d'Alene chart will include as before the Steamboat history but with new features, Native history, depth lines, navigation aids, kayak routs, and other new info. The chart will continue to show boat launches and access points.

Our chart will of course be available in printed form but also in artistic form, such as light up chart, wood, and metal. And we will also include clothing, with designs on hats, shirts, and hoodies, etc.

We will continue to have lake information on our site, FunToSAIL.com but our new chart and products will have its own new site at historicallakecda.com or historicallakecoeurdalene.com . For now these 2 web address our pointed at our funtosail.com lake cda page, but again as soon as our new site is up and running it will be directed to the new site.

Our new website will have extensive lake history not seen on our current funtosail page or anywhere else online. We will also include current day info, such as restaurants, resorts, and services.

So stay tuned, its all coming very soon!

If you never saw our old 1st edition chart here it is. Click here to visit our current Lake CdA page.

boatingtheinlandnw.com website noted on this chart is no longer in operation.

Malbec18 Sportboat keelboat

Malbec18 Sportboat/Keelboat

We currently have a sale on our Melbac18 at $44,000 with $2500 off of options. This is an amazing dealer offered rarely.

Saturday, June 25 of 2022 was the second time I have sailed my Malbec 18, and first time in the summer. I had 1-5 knots of wind during my sailing class I was teaching from noon to about 3, but then after the class the wind piped up to 7-10 knots while sailing with my wife. I cannot express enough just how well this boat sails in very light to stronger winds. The boat will sail with a whisper of wind and handle stronger winds as well.

The boat is easy to rig, taking my time it only takes 20 minutes are so. Less rigging time means more sailing time.

Part of the plan is to use my boat for our sailing classes and use as a RV for camping, a Recreational Vessel (RV). Stay tuned for more.

Soggy Tandem Island

I have indicated to some of my customers that the hatches on the Hobie Mirage Tandem Island (TI) can leak. Here is a great example of that truth with a TI that is currently in the Race 2 Alaska (2023).

How do you fix this issue. For most trips you will be fine but if you are getting waves over your boat consistently that is when it becomes a problem. To fix it, one puts oil or vacylinee on the seals to make the water bead up and reapply ever so often. Tyten the forward hatch bungee. One can also put an extra seal on the forward bow cover/hatch. See the video below for these and other additional fixes.

As we see in this video the boat is totally full of water. The sailors indicate the boat did not sink due to the outer hulls buoyancy and mostly that is true, but there is also positive flotation in the center hull that should never be removed.

Watch the progress of this TI in the Race 2 Alaska by visiting this site and also visiting R2AK.com

The Rocket a board boat

I am happy to announce that we will be carrying the Rocket, a 14-foot lateen sailboat on lines with the Sunfish, Sea/Super Snark, and even the Laser that does not have a latten sail set up. The advantage of the Rocket over the Sunfish and the like is its light, fast, stiff, pretty stable for a boat of its design, and is super easy to rig. Not to mention it is beautiful to look at. Great for a day sail or going camping. And the price for a small day sailor sailboat of this high quality is simply not available other than via the Rocket.

So, if you want a boat of this size and design, want to learn more please click here!
