Hobie Potholes

After a couple of challenging years, it's time to get our Inland NW Hobie Cat and Small Boat Sailor club going again. This is our first event of 2024 that will include a fun Saturday distance maze race through the sand islands of the Potholes Reservoir just below Moses Lake, WA. in Eastern WA. Prizes given! In the evening we will have a beach party.

Bring your kites. This area has amazing winds.

You can come for the day's events or stay longer and camp with us. We will camp for free on the northeast side of the reservoir.

Event takes place July 27, Saturday. Camping over the weekend.

In 2024 we are having a big Hobie Wave event (more info coming soon). Join our Inland NW Wave Club or if you are not in our area join the Formula Hobie Wave Class to connect with Wave sailors in your area. Actually, join the Formula Wave Class regardless to support Wave sailing and racing everywhere.

Spent a beautiful day in October 2022 on Hayden Lake Idaho practicing overboard recovery of Wilson the volleyball. Three teenagers learning to sail and practice picking up Wilson and type 4 throwable. If you want to learn to sail to a dock but are concerned with hitting the dock under sail, I recommend practicing overboard recovery drills, as when you do so you're learning to stop and go, and those skills are transferable to safe docking.

Inland NW Sailing and Kiting

This year in the Inland NW, Pacific NW, and Northern Mountain States we have seen consistent heavy rains resulting in Yellowstone National Park being closed due to destroyed roads and bridges, etc. In the Coeur d'Alene Idaho/Spokane WA area records has been set for the coolest weather and most rain for spring and early Summer.

The good news is this coming week weather is predicted to be in the 70's and the following week in the 80's so it appears summer is finally here.

So, with that predicted weather the Inland NW Sailor plan to do some consistent sailing on Hayden Lake, a cruise/camp on Priest Lake, Idaho in July along with a Kite flying activity at Broadmore Park in Hayden Idaho also in July. We will be posting a notice about both of these events here and on our calendar. STAY TUNED!

 

January 2022 Club Activity

Fellow Hobie, Malbec, Daysailor, trailer-able Sportboat/Keelboata, Inland NW sailors (that was a mouth full) on January 8 at 6:pm at the Silver Lake Mall FunToSAIL store in Coeur d'Alene Idaho we are having our first sailing activity of the year. We will be watching some SailGP racing and enjoying each others company. Plus talking a bit about the new year activities, etc.

Halloween and Trick-or-Treat

 Join us on October 30th for a Halloween/Harvest Community Market at the Silver Lake Mall in Coeur d'Alene Idaho USA from 10:AM to 3:PM. Lots of great locally made products to buy and things to see. FunToSAIL will be offering special deals on Hobie Cat and Sailboat products. Come dressed in your best Halloween costume. Check out Miles Moore with FunToSAIL pirate costume.

On the 31st there will be trick-or-treating for kids. Hosted by the Candlelight Christian Church. FunToSAIL will be there handing out treats, join us to help.

9-11 Events

Join two events on 9-11! Do the Tunnel 2 Towers 5K run or walk and then after that go to the Silver Lake Mall for the 9-11 Ceremony.

 

Sheriff Robert B. Norris cordially invites you to attend our September 11th  Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, September 11th at 9:00 am at the Silver Lake Mall, 200 W. Hanley Ave, Coeur d’Alene.

This will be a formal event featuring keynote speakers as well as an honor guard flag presentation, community prayer, and Pledge of Allegiance. The event is open to the public and all are welcome.  This is an opportunity for the community to reflect on these tragic and life-changing events and remember all of those who have sacrificed in the 20 years since this day.

Attendees from the Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, and Military communities are encouraged to attend in uniform appropriate for such occasions.

May 15, 2021 Scablands Fun Sail

Due to the Desert Regatta being cancelled again we have set up a new annual event called the Scablands Fun Sail. The plan is to simply have a beach party, fly kites, and go for a sail around the Islands on June TBA. If the water is warm enough, swim.

We will camp on the Northeast Shoreline of the reservoir, some will start to camp on June TBA and stay until the TBA. Our official event will be on May TBA.

The Reservoir has some nice launches around the lake with one private and one state run campgrounds. Covid restrictions are enforced at the state park and private campgrounds. We will be camping in the open primitive camping area where covid restrictions are less stringent. There are public restrooms where we will be camping but we are not sure they will be open so we suggest you bring your own portable toilets. And make sure you bring your own drinking water and food, etc.

GOOD NEWS! If you have never sailed or flown a kite at the Potholes Reservoir your in for a treat as the wind seems to almost always be spectacular and the water great. Great place to kayak as well.

Also in the area is the big Moses Lake Sand Dunes just north of us.

April and May Events

With the first day of spring fast approaching on March 20 we have some fun spring events coming. Online you can watch SailGP's first series of races for the year on April 24-25 in Bermuda. In May we have our first Inland NW Sailors club activity, FunToSAIL sailing lessons start, and the first annual Silver Lake Mall National Safe Boating event on 5/21-22 (see calendar) 

Fall Hobie Cat Sailing

Hello fellow sailors, sailing on Lake Coeur d'Alene and throughout the Inland NW is not over as seen in these pictures of a Hobie 17 sailed by a Harrison Idaho family on 11-28-2020. The previous week they sailed their Hobie Getaway on Lake CdA. Actually one never has to stop sailing. If a small lake near you is frozen over just head to one of the big lakes. Of course you will have all the need safety equipment to ensure your survival. Never sail alone!

So some have asked me "how does one become a Sailing Inland NW member?" Answer, the only way to become a member is to go to the club page at this link, go to the bottom of the page and introduce yourself to the club via the comment box. Simply state the boat(s) you sail, your first name (last name is good to post also but can leave that out if you are concerned about putting your full name online). If you have no experience sailing that is super ok, just state your sailing goal(s), want to crew, etc.

May 14th Demo Day and Next Event...

Hello fellow sailors & Hobie mirage kayakers,

Yesterday, May 14^th was our big Demo Day for the year which I might add was a tremendous success. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all those that helped and also thank all those who wished us success.

This event is sponsored by the businesses of Coeur d’Alene Kayaks and SAIL Marine, along with the organizations of Coeur d’Alene Canoe & Kayak Club and Sailing the Inland NW.  This is an annual event designed to introduce people to sailing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding. The turnout was quite large this year and just gets bigger and bigger every year.

Related to our efforts at this event I would say that sailing and Hobie mirage kayaking was a great hit. The TI and Weta trimaran in particular had a lot of interest. Winds were gusting up to 15 or more knots, but the big challenge was the constant 90 degree wind shifts. The people went out on the Weta were amazed by its performance and acceleration. The Hobie Wave also was taken out... the Wave is extremely stable in strong winds and easy to sail. Quite a few intro-to-sailing-lessons were done on the TI. I think a lot of people were impressed by the TI’s versatility (able to sail, paddle, and pedal it) and to a slightly lesser extent this applied to all the Hobie mirage kayaks at this event.
The important point about this event as it applies to Sailing the Inland NW (& SAIL Marine) is to increasing interest in sailing and Hobie mirage kayaking and to that end I believe we accomplished it.

Next Event…

On Sat. the 11^th at 9:AM we will be sailing on Lake Spokane (also known as Long Lake) from the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) park and launch. There is a campground here as well... The plan is to sail from the park toward the dam and beach at a sand spit near the dam, just hang out at this spit and picnic, and then sail some more and return to the DNR park. The DNR park has a sea wall around the park along the shore, so you will either need to put your boat back on the trailer or pull it up and over the short sea wall onto the grassy area (if you are going to pull your boat over the sea wall bring a piece of carpet to protect your hull). I have not sailed on this lake but have been told by an F18 sailor that the winds are great and fairly consistent. As always AI & TI sailors are welcome and if the wind dies you will be even more welcome when non-mirage drive boats need a tow. All craft with sails are welcome.
