Desert Regatta a huge success! 2012

The Desert Regatta was a huge success with a strong turnout from several classes (4 Thistles, 8 Fly Scouts, 3 Hobie's, 1 Weta). The Desert Regatta is the premier Inland Northwest small boat regatta. Due to family commitments I (Miles Moore) was note able to attend but Jeff Creim (1st in the multihull fleet, sailing a H17) has given us a quick report...

The Desert Regatta went well (results posted at link below), light to moderate winds on Saturday, and a real BLOW (15-20+) on Sunday. A FX One sailor, Fritz, was there so I had a boat to sail against, Merriam in her Weta and Kam with his H14 rounded out the Portsmouth Multihull field. I sailed with my factory sails so I could use the the Portsmouth numbers. Initially on Sunday Fritz and I were the only 2 boats that went out to race and while we were running our race, a couple Thistles also came out and started (only one finished). Fritz and I finished, but while waiting for out second start Fritz flipped twice (3 times if you count the cartwheel recovery attempt) and was done. The Thistles were done. So I sailed a couple screaming reaches and also went in. All in all a very fun time. We plan to do it again next year.

Events and the AC

It's summer and there is a lot going on in the Inland Northwest related to sailing. In 2013 there are many sailing regattas taking place within the Inland Northwest... such as the Desert Regatta that just took place this last weekend (6/16-17), which we will report on soon right here on this blog. On the right on this home page and a little down the page is our calendar, check out the dates for our sailing classes as well as up coming regattas and adventure trips.

ATTENTION: The July 21 Spokane River Rendezvous needs to be changed. Due to all the rain we believe the water will still be moving to fast over the dam that we will be sailing next to in down town Spokane so the July 21 event has been change to sailing the amazing Horseshoe Lake (click here to learn more about this lake). We are still planning on doing the Spokane River but we may have to wait until Aug. or early Sept. If it keeps raining through all of the summer (hopefully not) we may have to wait until next year.

We normally do not post events or news about sailing outside of the Inland NW but the Americas Cup is an except. This June 26-July 1 is the exciting final of the Americas Cup (AC) World Series in Rhode Island USA. The USA syndicate is only 4 points in the lead and so the championships is up for grabs, I hope the USA wins. Here is a video of the history of the AC I thought you all might like to see. Hobie 14 fills with water... rescue

As reported my Jeff of the Tri-Cities (sails a H17)... June 6, 2012

In other news, I did my good deed for the week helping my friend Kam rescue his H14.  He and I went sailing at Wallula Gap last Saturday (blowing 10-20, see chart), about 2:30 he flipped his boat and couldn’t get it righted, his starboard hull was full of water (Kam had lost a 5” port cover from his right hull), so he hand paddled it to the cliffy/rocky shore.  I carefully maneuvered my boat to the shore (luffing into the wind) and tied up to a big rock since there was nowhere to pull my boat out.  Four people who were watching with binoculars drove over and helped pull his boat onto shore enough so we could drain the hull (one of them took the rescue photos).  Fortunately I carry a spare port cover with me just in case something like this happens.  So after draining and re-plugging/porting we were able to send Kam on his way.  Now here is the irony, his boat got a few scrapes and a new port cover, my boat got sever rock rash in 2 spots, oh well.  Sunday I repaired the rock rash and am Good to GO.

On a side note from Miles Moore the Inland NW Hobie dealer (SAIL Marine) recommends purchasing the new hinged ports that are used on Hobie’s kayaks. You will never lose a port cover again.
